Why the first hire is different
The first sales hire in Germany is not a placement. It’s a market-entry decision. This person decides whether your category lands in Germany the way it landed in San Francisco. They build the first 20 customer relationships your European P&L will live or die on.
They probably interview and hire your second, third, and fourth sales rep. Get this hire wrong and you lose 9 to 18 months. Get it right and DACH becomes your second-largest region within 24 months.
What ‘first hire’ actually looks like
Seed / Series A, hot category: ‘A salesperson in Germany’ → A senior AE with a working channel network — not a Country Manager yet. Series B with US-only revenue: Country Manager DACH → A player-coach: 70% selling, 30% building.
Series C, $20M+ ARR: ‘Real’ GM / VP Sales DACH → A true GM who can hire SDR + SE + 2 AEs in year one. Public co. opening DACH office: Senior VP / Managing Director → A search profile that requires an existing DACH BU on their CV.

What if my first hire doesn't work out?
Every placement carries a 12-month guarantee. If the hire leaves or is let go for performance reasons inside 12 months, I run a replacement search at no additional fee.
Do you work with companies without a German entity yet?
Yes. Many of my US-tech-vendor clients hire their first DACH rep through an Employer-of-Record (Deel, Remote, Velocity Global) before setting up a GmbH.
