Forward Deployed Engineers for AI and enterprise software vendors in DACH and the Nordics
AI and enterprise software vendors expanding into Europe need engineers who can sit with a customer, build on top of the platform and own the result. In DACH and the Nordics these people are hard to find, because few of them hold the title yet. I recruit Forward Deployed Engineers and the leaders who build FDE teams, with a focus on the customer-facing, commercial side of the role.
I studied computer science in Stockholm and started as a software developer before I moved into sales. For 25 years I sold enterprise technology and worked closely with the engineers who got it running at the customer. That is how I tell a strong backend engineer from someone who can build, deploy and grow an account.
The role started at Palantir and has since been adopted by many AI vendors. A Forward Deployed Engineer deploys the product inside the customer's environment and makes it deliver value there. It is not a Sales Engineer who hands over at signature, and it is not fixed-scope professional services. The FDE owns the customer's first real result and supports the expansion that follows: part engineer, part consultant, part account owner.
Forward Deployed Engineer
Builds on your platform, deploys it inside large and often regulated customers and is accountable for the result.
Senior / Lead Forward Deployed Engineer
Sets the technical bar, runs the hardest deployments and coaches the team as it grows.
Head of Forward Deployed Engineering
Builds and leads the FDE team, owns the deployment model and works between product, sales and the customer.
Solutions Architect with deployment ownership
For customers who need someone to take the software live, without the full FDE remit.
Build
Can the candidate ship code against your platform, not only draw the architecture?
Deploy
Has the candidate taken software live inside a large organisation, through security review, data residency questions and procurement?
Commercial
Does the candidate see the deployment as the start of revenue and expansion, not as the finish line?
Standing with the customer
Can the candidate hold their own with the customer's architects and senior management, in the customer's language?
Briefing
We define the role, the deployment model and what success looks like after twelve months.
Direct approach
I approach candidates confidentially in the roles where this profile lives today: Solutions Architects and Sales Engineers who still write code, implementation consultants and technical founders. No job boards.
Assessment
I interview every candidate myself on build, deploy and commercial skills before you see a name. Where it helps, your engineers run a technical session before the final round.
Shortlist and interviews
You meet a small number of candidates who fit. I prepare both sides for every interview.
Offer and start
I support the offer, the negotiation and the resignation up to the start date. Every placement carries a written 6-month replacement guarantee.
01What is the difference between a Forward Deployed Engineer and a Sales Engineer?
A Sales Engineer supports the sale and usually hands over at signature. A Forward Deployed Engineer comes in after the sale, builds and deploys the product inside the customer's environment and owns the first result and the expansion that follows. The role involves more code and more commercial ownership.
02Do Forward Deployed Engineers need to speak German?
For regulated and mid-sized customers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, usually yes. For AI scale-ups selling to digital-native buyers, strong English is often enough, and in the Nordics English generally works. The requirement should follow the customers the FDE will work with. I speak German, Swedish and English myself and check language in the interview.
03Where do Forward Deployed Engineer candidates come from in DACH if few people hold the title?
From adjacent roles: senior Solutions Architects and Sales Engineers who still build, implementation and delivery consultants from enterprise software vendors, technical founders of early-stage start-ups, and professional services engineers who want commercial ownership.
04How should a Forward Deployed Engineer be paid in DACH?
Usually with a strong base salary, above a pure Sales Engineer, and a variable part tied to deployment milestones and account expansion rather than bookings alone. A US-style package with a high variable share is often hard to sell to candidates in Germany. We agree the structure in the briefing.
